Today I’d like to introduce you to another reggae artist, more specifically, 卍LINE (Manji Line). His real name is Kubozuka Yosuke and is a well-known actor in Japan who appears in titles such as “Go!” and “Ping Pong” and more recently, “Tokyo Jima”.
On June 6, 2004, at the age of 25, Yosuke miraculously survived a 26-meter fall from his apartment in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, and it was after that accident he decided to start a career as a musician. Yosuke is now 31 years old and concentrates on his music, but still acts in movies on a regular basis.
What I love about Manji Line, apart from his voice that is just perfect for reggae, is that his songs actually have a meaning and there’s often some kind of subliminal message embedded in them. His lyrics are so full of passion and they can in an instant make you feel sad, happy or encouraged.
I strongly recommend giving Manji Line’s music a try, not only, but especially, if you’re into Japanese reggae. I think he’s definitely one of the best reggae artists from Japan today. IKIRO (video above) is my favorite song, but I also recommend “My Son My Sun” from his album “VORTEX”. And of course, his tribute to TERRY THE AKI-06, “” is very beautiful.
