What is an Otaku, a Jukensei, a Narikin or an Obatarian? Where does the name Yakuza come from, and what is special about Fugu? What exactly is Shintoism and what is Kabuki?

This is all stuff you might have wondered yourself, and I bring the answers, or actually, Peter Machat from 51japanesecharacters.com does.

51 Japanese Characters

51 Japanese Characters is a collection of figurines introducing you to all the typical, and not so typical, members of the Japanese society. You can get the characters as postcards for $22 from the site, but the first edition is limited to 500 pieces, so don’t wait for too long if you want to get your hands on these. If you haven’t bought your Christmas cards yet, surprise your friends with these funny cards! A poster will also be released on December 8, you can pre-order it right now.

Well, if you don’t feel like spending, the information itself is free and available at the site itself. Every character has a short and easy to digest description, just the way I like it. My favorite character is probably the Seppuku, or the Okama, but there are many good ones.
