AKB48′s General Elections and Everyday, Kachuusha sales

Published on May 26th, 2011.

Just back from Japan and my 2nd theater show (I’ll hopefully elaborate on that later) AKB are making headlines. As the first round of AKB’s third General Election results are announced, AKB’s latest single ‘Everyday, Kachuusha’ tops the charts with first day sales of 942,475. AKB triumphed artists like Team Amuse!! with 55,916 and Johnny’s TOKIO with 9,570 sales. At this rate it looks like it’ll be on the road to breaking records.

Oshima Yuko is currently leading the polls again this year with 17,156 votes. Maeda Atsuko is close by with 16,452. Oshima is currently leading by 704 votes. At last years election she beat Atsuko by 600 votes.

As these are only the first of the results of the voting which began on May 24th, there’s still a long way to go until June 8th when the final results will be announced, at Nippon Budokan. The election includes all of AKB48′s members and research students (70), SKE48 members (57), and NMB48 members (25) for a total of 152 people. The members who are elected to be in the top 21 will be a part of AKB48’s 22nd single, while the girls who rank between 22 and 40 will form a unit called ‘Undergirls’ which will sing the B-side for the 22n single.

Fans are in shock as Team B’s captain Kasawagi Yuki is currently in 3rd place. She placed 8th in last year’s final results. A friend of mine that was lucky enough to attend the concert in which the votes were announced told me that many people were discussing Itano Tomomi’s position at 8th as she placed 4th last year. Yukirin and Tomochin have currently swapped positions it seems.

I’m very pleased with the results so far and looking forward to the final results on the 8th. Oshima Yuko is of course my favourite and I hope she places 1st. As for girls like Sashihara Rino and Yokoyama Yui I’m happy to see them doing so well.

Good sales indeed – though 5500 of them were from one person! http://blog.livedoor.jp/insidears/archives/52462443.html – at a cost of 8.8million yen.
