First off I’d just like to say thank you to Flaffer and my friend Mathilda who recommended this band to me. I’ll just have to spread the word, ’cause this band is sweet!

Asobi Seksu is actually a band based in New York, but their singer, Yuki Chikudate, is Japanese and often uses Japanese lyrics. Asobi Seksu is a shoegaze/dream pop band and yes, the name is a bit odd, since it means something like “sex for fun”.

The band was formed in 2004 and they debuted with a self-titled album, followed by a second album, “Citrus”, in 2006.

Saw them live in Chicago Wednesday. They rocked. Much louder and experimental live. Reminded me of Sonic Youth with long descending passages od wailing guitars. John had an effects board about 18″ x 18″ FILLED with effect pedals. More then any other guitarist I have seen before. He really was one of the most impressive guitarists I have seen in a long time.

And Yuki is so freakin’ cute, it’s not even funny. Her voice gets more powerful the higher the register, although the sound man had the vocals way too low, except when she belted out the higher registers. She would do the cutest breath and lift off her heels when she belted the words out.

Sounds cool! I haven’t seen them live, but I definitely want to!
