Fukuyama Dentist Clinic

in Japan

If you’ve kept yourself up to date in the Japan blogosphere lately you probably know of Akiba:F, a futuristic otaku blood donation facility in Akihabara, Tokyo.

Akiba:F is a really cool facility and this is what all of these sort of organizations should aim for, make the visit interesting and I will gladly donate and help out more.

Now of course otaku culture isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, Keisuke Maeda of UID Architects has given it a completely different approach with this dentist clinic in Fukyama, Hiroshima.

Going to the dentist is really something no one likes to do, I’ve had braces so I would know. And it doesn’t really help that everything is white like if you were visiting a shrink. And at least around here, the place is often cramped so when you’re in the waiting room you can hear the sounds of teeth getting drilled and other stuff you just don’t want to hear at all.

This dentist clinic is really something else, it’s warm, spacy and has an overall design that would make me feel more calm. As for price I would guess that visiting this dentist is a little more expensive than the regular ones, but if dentists creep you out it’s probably worth it!

I especially like the waiting room, it’s a lot better than some chairs and benches lined up against the wall where you can’t do anything productive whatsoever.

Greenery, calming red colors and wood, couldn’t get any better in my opinion.

Would you pay a little more to go to a dentist clinic like this one?

I would go to this dentist and pay more for it. Most of the dental work I’ve had done was done by US military facilities, and let me tell you… they’re not designed for comfort. At all. They don’t really take you comfort in mind when doing procedures either. I once had some as*hole dentist tell the nurse, while removing my wisdom teeth, “I bet this one’s gonna break and then we’ll have to cut and dig it out.” I wanted to punch that bastard in the face, but he had tools in my mouth so I had to restrain myself.

Ugh, that doesn’t sound very nice. I would probably not go there :P

By the way, I like this dark header with the anime chick in the middle, where it looks like she’s holding that orange ball. Very fun!

Yeah I added 4 really cool Hatsune Miku headers the other day, I like them all^^

Oh … I see what you did there…

It rotates. Cool. ^_^ Keeps it fresh and interesting.

Oh, and this place looks lovely. Good idea with the desk space for waiting patients. (And… to subscribe to comments. ^_^ )

Reminded me that I need to go to the dentist which I have been avoiding. Wish my dentist had a surgery like that.

That’s not good! You should take care of your teeth :) Seems like a lot of people avoid going to the dentist these days, should open a clinic like this here, it would probably do really well.

That is one beautiful dentist’s office. Not even worth comparing to horrors of UK dentistry (okay, not all are bad). I would gladly pay to make something as awful as getting a filling even slightly more Zen.

I’ve never seen anything like it, they all feel too much like hospitals. The difference is that they don’t give you drugs or put you to sleep :P

This is really cool! I can`t see why anyone would not want to spend a little extra cash on the place.

Yeah you’re probably right. This is probably a really good business opportunity, start a few of these with different designs and you’d probably get a lot of customers^^

This reminds me of another place that I saw on tv had the same thought, although they set things up a different way. They set up a piano close to where the patients sit and would have classical concerts 2 or 3 times a week. The patients said it was really relaxing and were willing to pay top dollar – it was out in Kansai, Osaka I believe.

Oh that’s cool! Classical and ambient music would make this place even better, I sure would pay extra for that.

I’d poor more to go to a dentist like this but alas when you sit in that chair, with that bright light in your face and you hear the sound of that damn drill if you are like me you still stand a chance of soiling your diapers.

I’ve had a lot of dental work done, so I feel your pain Jamaipanese. There was that instance I mentioned previously, plus another time when nearly 1/4 of my tooth just cracked off for some reason in my sleep and they repaired it. I thought they were going to pull the tooth and replace it but they used some sort of filler and rebuilt it instead. It wasn’t a pleasant experience regardless.

I blame my tooth problems on spending so much time in places where the water isn’t fluoridated, including a few months in Iraq during 2003 when we barely had enough water to drink, let along brush teeth or bathe.

This is one of the prettiest dentist offices I have seen.

Hello Yonasu, Sashiburi desu! Anyway just thought I’d let you know your right hand menus intrude into the content on Firefox OSX. Or maybe your top photo was too big?

I’m not sure what you mean? I’m on Firefox OS X and everything seems to be just fine, you’re the first one to say this… Can you send me a screenshot?

Brad F. October 21, 2009 at 2:10 am

Interesting. I’m on Firefox on Ubuntu 9.10 right now. No problem. I’m too lazy to fire up my MacBook and usually use Safari on it so haven’t noticed anything.

I used to live near there! I moved away right before it was finished. It sure looks better than every other dentist clinic in the area. I shutter when thinking about them.
