Gyaru Wednesday Wk2Published on June 16th, 2010.
Another Wednesday is here and the gyarus are here to lighten up the mood. Since the first post in this series, quite a few people have asked me what a gyaru is, and to give a proper answer to that I’m gonna look it up in my newly purchased Otaku Encyclopedia! And this is what it says:
Gyaru (ギャル): Gals. Young Japanese women known for outrageous fashions and hanging out in Tokyo’s club districts. They have fake tans, wear short skirts, and favor accessories big on bling. They abandon traditional Japanese feminine modesty and are tough, rude, crude, and ultra-sexy. Gyaru are champions of consumption and keep in touch via communication networks on their cell phones. Most of them hang out around Center-gai street and the 109 building in Sibuya. Gyaru characters tend to pop up in anime, like Kotobuki Ran from the anime Super Gals! (2001-2002) and Keiko, the little-sister character from Genshiken (2004).
See, the Otaku Encyclopedia has already come in handy. :)
