Earlier today it was reported that several users of the Japanese iTunes Store have been charged for downloads they never made. Apparently we’re talking about anything from a few hundred yens to hundred thousands of yen, and Japanese authorities plan to summon Apple officials for an explanation. AFP reports that there has been 95 cases like these in Japan so far, with a steady increase since autumn last year.
This is currently being investigated and I’d say it’s highly likely that either people’s personal data has been stolen, or even more likely that people use their last names as passwords. This is perhaps a security flaw in iTunes, since once you have added your credit card, anyone with your password can use your account to purchase stuff from the store. You don’t need to enter the CVC code for each order like with most online stores.
So keep your passwords strong and keep all your credit cards to yourself, will ya?
