Spotify is a proprietary peer-to-peer music streaming service that allows instant listening to specific tracks or albums with almost no buffering delay. Music can be browsed by artists, albums or created playlists as well as by direct searches.
I think Spotify is a lot like Pandora and Rhapsody that you Americans have, although probably better. Spotify is only available in a handful of European countries so far, but I bet they’re planning to release it worldwide at some point.
Spotify doesn’t have too much Asian music on it right now but every once in a while you stumble upon something that you didn’t think you’d find. It’s kind of like looking for Easter eggs, because I’ve found that sometimes there are Asian artists on it that goes under the wrong artist name, like sometimes you have to search for the composer’s name instead. I found an album by Humming Urban Stereo by searching for Jeereen Lee for example.
Well, this time I did a random search, it’s worth a try sometimes, and found that there’s a pretty good collection of Jolin Tsai albums on Spotify (if not all of them). The only problem with Asian music on Spotify is that the tags are sometimes romanized and sometimes aren’t, something that might annoy tagging perfectionists, I don’t mind though.
If you live in a country where Spotify is invite only (like Sweden), I’d be happy to invite you.
Another thing worth to mention is that the Spotify iPhone app got approved in the AppStore today, so hopefully we’ll all have it on our iPhones very soon. You need to have a premium account to use the iPhone app however! You can sync the songs to your iPhone so if you have a bandwidth cap like me, that’s not a problem.
Have you found anything on Spotify that you thought you’d never find there?

Cool I like her music.
There are a lot of asian artists on there you just to stumble on to them.
I’m not a big fan but she has a few good ones! If you find any good ones, let me know ;)
Spotify is not available in Singapore yet. That’s something I’ve really come to loathe about living abroad. I never realized how many online services were geographically restricted. On top of that, I never realized how left out Asia typically is. I can’t seem to find an online streaming music service that’s free in Singapore that’s worthwhile. Maybe someone will see my comment and give me some tips?
We’re generally left out here in Europe as well, most of the good services are US only, like Hulu. But we’re getting better! While Spotify is free, I prefer paying for the premium service to get rid of the annoying ads.
I dunno of any streaming services that are available in Singapore, so I unfortunately can’t help you with that.
When I lived in the US I had no problem signing up for premium ser ices. The value of the local currency here doesn’t lend well to having tons of US services though. When I move back there I’m sure I’ll go back to my old ways.
