Kamei Eri, Jun Jun, and Lin Lin Graduating from Morning Musume and Hello! Project

This might come as a surprise to many Hello! Project fans out there, and since Kamei Eri has been my favorite idol for many years now, I understand your feelings, but do I feel the same?

For those who don’t know who these people are, they’re part of an idol agency called the Up-Front Group. The idols on this agency are put under a family name called Hello! Project, and the mothership of H!P is Morning Musume, a group that was once super famous but has lost most of its significance as of today. Morning Musume has been active since 1997 and a total of 25 girls have been part of it. The word “graduation” in this context refers to one or more members leaving the group. A graduation of a girl can be caused by several things, for example, a member can graduate for getting too old (this is usually their own decision), wanting to move on to do other things (such as modeling) or breaking their contracts by having boyfriends or smoking.

As a big fan of Kamei, this is a somewhat surprising turn of events, as Kamei was not expected to be the next one to graduate. What’s even more heartbreaking isn’t her leaving Morning Musume however, it’s the reason why. Kamei is graduating because of a medical issue, apparently she has had skin issues for quite a while and been treating it with medication and covering it up with make-up. Continuing to work normally did not seem to be an issue for Kamei, however, live performances where the girls sweat a lot and have to change outfits very often was a real pain for her. Apparently, what she’s suffering from is atopic dermatitis. While this might not be a life-threatening disease, “according to doctors, an external problem like skin problem may move to an internal level. It may as well have an impact on her spirit, her mental level. Also, for her, it is a serious thing so she decided to focus on her recovery instead of letting it continue.”.

It’s good to see Kamei prioritizing her health and I’m glad to hear that she has no intention whatsoever to retire from showbiz when her atopic dermatitis has been treated. Personally, I’m not really sad about her leaving Momusu, as long as she stays in showbiz, I’m happy. Kamei appeared as a guest actress in the currently airing drama Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo (with Naka Riisa), and perhaps that’s the route she’ll take when she gets back.

As for Jun Jun and Lin Lin (the two Chinese members of Momusu), honestly, the idea of taking them in in the first place was bad, in my opinion. But they’ve had 3 good years in Momusu and now Tsunku (the producer) is set to give them a career in China instead.

So what now?

Well, in my eyes, Momusu is doomed now. If Tsunku wants Momusu to stay alive, he has lots and lots to work on. It’s a sinking ship with only 5 members and just adding new members is most likely not going to save them. I think Tsunku will take a different approach at the whole idol thing from now on, and give the current members of Momusu something else to do, such as acting or singing solo. They’re all good entertainers so moving on might be the best thing to do now. Out of the remaining members, I will keep a closer eye on Michishige Sayumi and Niigaki Risa, I think Sayumi would do really well in a solo career. But I guess it’s still too soon to talk about that now.

My love for Kamei stays the same, Long Live Kameism stays the same, so while this is bad news, I can’t say that I’m not excited about what’s next. If Kamei takes on acting for real, that would be awesome^^

For now, let’s not feel too bad about it and just wish her well!

Yeah I hope so too! :) Hopefully she won’t be gone for too long, but she’ll probably take the opportunity and take some time off as well.

H!P started sinking like almost ten years ago in 2006, and keeps singling without end since then. It’s better she leaves while they are somewhat famous, intead of experiencing the bitter end. Now you know how I felt when Koharu Graduated. :(

I’m not sure I’m having the same feelings you had though. When it comes to the graduation, I’m more excited than I am sad :)

But yeah, you might be right, leaving now might be for the best.

kamei’s graduation is understandable, her health is important. But Chun Li’s and Qian Li’s graduation kinda comes out of left field for me. Wasn’t Lin Lin suppose to lead the new mini moni, and Jun Jun be part of the new Vuden with Sayumi?

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

Yeah, that’s the reason why I feel that it’s coming to an end. I think Tsunku’s intentions are to make them something else (including the five remaining members) while they’re still relatively popular. Or at least he’ll continue to make big changes to his current idol concept.

Perhaos he’s thinking of a reboot to his franchise or simply retiring MM in favour of C-ute since they are currently out ranking most of the other groups on the oricon charts. Also Qian Li was part of Project Egg kids for two years prior to joining MM, so she had been with the agency for 5yrs, Chun Li made the jump to MM right away from her audtion.

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

I think a reboot is on the way, even though C-ute and Berryz will live on. There’s really nothing wrong with the girls, but the management just can’t seem to give them anything to work with. Retiring Momusu won’t make them reach numbers like AKB’s, so they’ll have to make a lot of changes.
It can’t last forever, and it seems like now is the time to move on to something new. If he wants to beat Akimoto…^^

They should end MorningMusue, as they have been milking it’s fame for too long, and create some new groups, preferably outside H!P as they have a bad reputation and mad management. Most teens care and like AKB now, H!P seems outdated and just milking the old fann’s with overprices crappy merchandise to compensate for lack of CD sales.
Time for: CHANGE, YES WE CAN!

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

You’re very much right about that, this is their last chance to do something about it, but I think fresh new groups would be better, even though I love the members of Momusu.

It looks like they inted to add more members since they have now officially opened up auditions for 9th generation members. I agree with you that their management strategies arent the best the girls are great actresses, and and really good singers, i always found their dance choreography rather simplistic. With Takahasi, Niigaki, and Tanaka, being their Franchise players, they should probably find girls that can provide better depth.

At least Tsunku didn’t decide to make Morning Musume disband, but to revitalize them by changing members. I guess this announcement in this timing has a meaning that they will not allow further declining of MM. Japanese fans are picking a few new members possible candidates like Erina Mano, and Airi Suzuki and Maimi Yajima from ℃-ute (rest members of ℃-ute to be merged with S/Mirage.), adding to new members selected by audition, but who knows…

Morning Musume fans often talk about rivalry between MM and AKB48. But real rival should be Girls’ Generation debuting in this month in Japan. They are more experienced and well trained dancing & singing group who can outperform Morning Musume in Japan as well if they sing in Japanese.

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

I guess we’ll just have to see where it goes, moving them to Momusu might not be the best thing for them really. As for Girls’ Generation debuting in Japan, I have to ask, will they sing in Japanese?

“Moving some members to Morning Musume from other H!P group” is just what some enthusiastic fans are saying. Although it has a certain reason that MM need more experienced skillful new members who can soon join the concerts, whereas new young girls selected by audition need a lot of singing & dancing practice because MM perform as much as 25 songs at the concert. Also ℃-ute haven’t shown up at the TV music program for a long time, so it might be better for the top 2 popular members of ℃-ute to move to MM if possible.

As for Girls’ Generation, I assume they are going to sing in Japanese in Japan if I’m not wrong. Besides, one member speaks excellent Japanese. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0haGeRHGD6s Tohoshinki (TVXQ) actually have been singing in Japanese, was pretty much the key factor of their success in Japan. I cannot imagine GG will sing in Korean and be successful in Japan.

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

Kpop is very popular in Japan right now actually, but they’re pretty different from Japanese idol groups. So I think they’ll have a hard time stealing any fans from them, but I could be wrong. And rather than competing, I think people can appreciate both them and their favorite J-pop idol group, it’s not like they really have to choose just one^^

I’d love to see Airi in Morning Musume!

Didnt MM start off with 5 members? The more i think about it the more i feel that it might be better for them to stick with a five member crew, while the new members have time to catch up. Lets not forget either that they should have several members of project eggs that should be able to make the jump.

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

Hmm yeah, that sounds good to me. I haven’t kept track of the eggs, anyone in particular that you think would be good in Momusu?

Maeda Yuuka, Wada Ayaka, Fukuda Kanon, and Ogawa Saki were going to graduate from eggs into full time members of hello project in spring 2010, so any one of them really, they have many years of being back up dancers to MM and have acting experience on tv dramas and Up Front movies.

I don’t think Tsunku would give up on S/mileage just yet though, but personally I wouldn’t mind seeing Yuuka in Momusu^^

From what i understand other Egg members will be taking their place on S/mileage. Also just throwing it out there, Kono and Ogawa were graduated prematurely so they can follow their studies, but both were set to return to Up Front Agencies in some capacity. Not saying that they’ll be part of of MM full time but it would be a good marketing campaign to rekindle nostalgia in the brand.

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

I see, well I still find that hard to believe… It would be awesome to see Konno and Makoto coming back to Momusu though, would be surprising to say the least^^

Oops, sorry for typing S/mileage wrong. I actually had never listened to their songs. Therefore I didn’t know how to write スマイレージ in correctly.

Apart from Morning Musume topic… I don’t think ” K-Pop is popular in Japan “. Basically, J-Pop is self sufficient market and there’s not much room for Korean (or Chinese /Taiwanese) singers unless they can perform very well in Japanese. Even the popularity of Boa and Wonder Girls dropped so fast, which is one of the reasons why they went to America. ( How Kara and Girls’ Generation will do ? ) Moreover, the fanbase of Tohoshinki and other Korean male singers is exclusively middle-aged women. Also US/UK singers aren’t that popular anymore in Japan as it used to be. ( Probably the most popular foreign pop singer is Avril Lavigne. I personally like Usher, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé.) And, it’s a pity Yuna Ito, Angela Aki, Soulja, Alan, Crystal Kay and some other singers who have foreign background are sort of under-rated.

As for Girls’ Generation, I was a little worried for Morning Musume’s sake because GG is No1 Asian female idol group and their dancing/singing style is a bit similar to MM.

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

Well perhaps it has lost its significance, but I don’t think so, K-pop was huge when I was in Japan in January. At least took up a lot of space in the cd stores^^ I wouldn’t say Angela Aki and Alan are underrated though, they’re doing really well I’d say, not Beyoncé well, but still.

I don’t think GG will be a threat to MM, or other J-pop idol groups at all to be honest. The biggest threat MM is facing is their own agency, they’re just milking money out of the remaining fans rather than trying to change.

As far as popularity of K-Pop goes, those Korean artists who are staying in Japan and singing in Japanese language, are certainly popular in Japan to some extent. But in that case the question is ” Are they doing K-Pop or J-Pop ? “. I know a song ” Last Angel ” by Tohoshinki performed with Kumi Koda, and I don’t feel this song like K-Pop at all, but just like any other ordinary J-Pop sung by Koda (with Tohoshiki). Also Boa’s hit song ” MeriKuri ” is mostly considered J-Pop sung by a Korean star. Actually most Japanese people don’t know songs by Rain or Girls Generation sung in Korean language in South Korea, which are genuine K-Pop.

I personally am happy enough when Morning Musume just won’t disband and give many concerts domestically and overseas like in China lately. (One overseas rival is Girls Generation.) And I don’t want to blame Tsunku or Up-Front Agency for milking money out of the remaining fans rather than trying to change as each Momusu member looks happy and has high income. Of course we all know their management isn’t the best, But anywhere in the world it’s quite rare that a pop group having survived more than a decade, still can gain a lot of new fans. For examples, B’z, Dreams Come True and Mr. Children sell many concert tickets and CD, but they are just supported by their old remaining fans. No wonder MM is doomed and can’t make new big hit songs anymore. Anyway, this time we shall be looking forward to seeing some good changes for MM.

    • http://twitter.com/yonasu yonasu

I see, well, if they don’t sing in Korean, it’s not K-pop in my opinion. I’m not sure if that’s really true what you say about those big groups like Mr. Children though. I’m a pretty new fan of them myself, and as long as they continue to create good songs that appear in dramas and whatnot, they’ll still get new fans, no matter how old the group may be. SMAP was formed in 1988, the same year Mr. Children was formed, and they surely don’t just rely on their old fanbase.
