ikuta toma

If you were only allowed to watch movies and dramas of one actor for the rest of that actor’s acting career, who would you choose?

This is definitely not an easy question to answer, at least for me. I have more than one favorite and there are many other factors that are important to consider. I haven’t chosen mine yet so it’ll be interesting to see which one I end up with.

A whole bunch of actors

These are the ones that will be competing. From left to right:

  • Toda Erika
  • Ikuta Toma
  • Mizushima Hiro
  • Nagasawa Masami
  • Oguri Shun
  • Eikura Nana
  • Kuroki Meisa
  • Kawashima Umika
  • Nishikido Ryo
  • Eita
  • Aragaki Yui
  • Ninomiya Kazunari
  • Ueto Aya

I could make that list longer but I think those are the ones that will be competing for the first place.

The first factor I’m gonna look into is versatility. I wouldn’t want to watch high school dramas all the time so the actor needs to be able to act in various genres and roles. I’m going to eliminate Eikura Nana and Kawashima Umika here. While I do believe in their versatility, I don’t have any proof of it. Their acting history is too short to know for sure. I’m also going to eliminate Nishikido Ryo because he’s a bit gloomy, someone should put him in a monkey costume once in a while.

Next factor is a personal one, it’s my own history with these actors. Basically meaning how much I’ve actually seen, which basically means how well I can trust them in the future. It’s pretty easy to eliminate one here, and that is Kuroki Meisa. While I’ve enjoyed her in every way so far, she can’t beat the others.

This leaves:

  • Eita
  • Toda Erika
  • Aragaki Yui
  • Ueto Aya
  • Mizushima Hiro
  • Nagasawa Masami
  • Ikuta Toma
  • Oguri Shun
  • Ninomiya Kazunari

The actor needs to be able to make me laugh (out loud). I’d say this is a pretty hard thing to do for actors (in real life it’s another thing) since I tend to laugh silently in my mind when reading and watching TV and movies. I’m going to eliminate those who haven’t made me laugh well enough yet, those are Mizushima Hiro, Nagasawa Masami and Toda Erika.

Now it’s getting really hard… Only 6 actors left! All of these make me laugh, but who’s good with romance? I’m gonna have to eliminate Ninomiya Kazunari, which isn’t fun at all. He’s really good with the serious human type of dramas which I like a lot, but romance doesn’t seem to be his cup of tea. Also eliminated here is Ikuta Toma and Ueto Aya. They’re both really good but Ikuta Toma hasn’t really proven himself in that genre, and Ueto Aya tends to be in dramas which might be romantic, but lacks seriousness which makes them more like comedies.

That leaves Oguri Shun, Aragaki Yui and Eita. I need to make sacrifices to make this work out. If I eliminate Oguri Shun, I can say good bye to action and I would miss his humor a lot. But since action isn’t one of my favorite genres I have to let him go.

And choosing between Eita and Aragaki Yui is actually pretty easy for me. Although I think Eita is great, he isn’t as touching as Aragaki Yui, he hasn’t made me shed any tears like she has. Well, I don’t blame him really, not many manage to do so. And of course it’s not only because of the actors themselves, it’s also the whole story and feeling in the dramas they appear in. Aragaki Yui always has someone else beside her who can somewhat complete her. Like in Papa to Musume no Nanokakan for example, Aragaki Yui herself wasn’t really the funny one, it was the dad, but together they made a really good drama.

So, the winner seems to be Aragaki Yui! Of course I will never have to choose just one actor and the winner might have been someone else if I was solely deciding it on who I like the most. Anyways, Smile is the upcoming drama that she will star in. She’s going to play a young woman named Hana who lost her ability to speak in an accident. This sounds really interesting to me and I think she will do a great job in this role, it kind of reminds me of Kyoko Fukada in Tenshi which I also enjoyed thoroughly.

If you could only choose one, who would it be? Would you just pick your favorite or would you take other factors in consideration as well?

And lastly, a few pics of the winner.

Hachimitsu to Clover

Students, romance, friendship, they are all a very usual mix in dramas, but I never get tired of them. This time it’s Hachimitsu to Clover (Honey and Clover), which I finished watching sometime in the middle of 2008. This drama is full of familiar faces, at least for me, which probably boosted my overall rating a little, the average Kanto rating is just 8.9.

Well, this drama is full of good actors. To namedrop some, we have Narimiya Hiroki (Innocent Love, Bloody Monday, Stand Up!!), Ikuta Toma (Voice, Maou, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e), Narumi Riko (Ruri no Shima, Ichi Rittoru no Namida) and Kashiwabara Takashi (Celeb to Binbo Taro). All of these are great actors, but among them, Narimiya Hiroki is my favorite.

Hachimitsu to Clover is the story about Hanamoto Hagumi, a very shy girl who went all the way from Nagano to Tokyo to become a part of a school’s Oil Painting Department. She has always been a quiet girl and she basically only knows how to paint, but that’s something she’s very good at. At the day she arrives to Tokyo for her first time, she’s introduced to four other students who will be taking care of her. And since it’s also a comedy, you can expect it to be funny right from the start, I don’t want to spoil anyhing, but the introduction is awesome.

I think that this drama is a good watch, many of you are probably fans of both Ikuta Toma and Narimiya Hiroki, and possibly some of the other actors in this drama as well. Oh and Hamada Gaku (Proposal Daisakusen) is one of the guest actors, he’s just incredibly fun to watch.

It’s definitely worth watching, so give it a try!

Although I was more excited by last season’s dramas, this winter does have a few potential goodies as well. The first drama I’m going to mention is Voice, I’ll feature a couple of others as well so look forward to that!

Voice is a medical mystery drama with Eita in the lead along with Ikuta Toma, Ishihara Satomi, Endo Yuya and Sato Tomohito. The story is about five medical students whose goal is to convey the “voices of the dead.”

Kaji Daiki fails to get into a popular heart surgery seminar but is somehow accepted into a seminar on forensic pathology. When he approaches professor Sagawa and asks him why he ended up in the seminar, Sagawa challenges him by asking why he wants to study heart surgery. Daiki replies that medicine is meaningless after the heart stops, but Sagawa counters that medicine also applies to the dead. –Tokyograph

This is probably going to be the most popular drama of this season, mostly because of this being Eita’s first lead role in a drama. I like Eita, but the other actors in this drama are just as good, I’m especially fond of Ishihara Satomi (Hanayome to Papa, Puzzle) and Ikuta Toma (Maou, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e). I think it’ll be a little weird for me to watch this right now since I just finished watching Hanayome to Papa, both lead roles (father and daughter) are found in this drama.

Well, this is a drama I’m definitely looking forward to and I think you should give it a try as well. The first episode got a good rating too (Kanto 17.7) so it’s promising. A really good theme song by GReeeeN is a big plus as well!

This drama is a remake of a popular Korean suspense drama called The Devil, which was aired last year on Korean TV. Ohno Satoshi plays the role of a two-faced lawyer called Naruse Ryo, one of which is very kind and the other who’s plotting a revenge on the person who killed his brother when they were young. Ikuta Toma plays the role as Serizawa Naoto, the one who caused the death and is now working as a detective to make up for his sins.

  • Title: 魔王
  • Title (romaji): Maou
  • Format: Renzoku
  • Genre: Suspense, Romance
  • Viewership rating: 11.4 (Kanto)
  • Episodes: 11
  • Broadcast network: TBS
  • Broadcast period: 2008-Jul-04 to 2008-Sept-12
  • Air time: Friday 22:00
  • Theme song: truth by Arashi
  • Related TV show: The Devil (KBS2, 2007)

This drama is very exciting to watch, but it’s not mind-blowing. However, there’s a possible favorite-to-be girl in this drama, Kobayashi Ryoko, she’s new to me but I’m looking forward to see more of her in the future (she’s amazingly cute!).

Everybody knows about Akihabara, the district of Tokyo that is full of manga, anime, figurines, games and electronics. The district where you’ll find young girls dressed as maids, serving their masters in cafes. This drama is about a company of 6 otakus called Akihabara@DEEP who’s there to protect the inhabitants, or fellow otakus, of Akihabara. @DEEP was formed by a girl called Yui through a website called Yui’s Lifeguard, a site that helps otakus get through their lifes socially.

Akihabara@DEEP has an interesting cast, to mention some, we have two gravure idols, namely Kosaka Yuka and Matsushima Hatsune who both does their job as providing moee~~ moments. There’s also Ikuta Toma who’s an extremely funny guy, looking forward to see more of him. And also worth to mention is Kimura Yuki, if you don’t know him he’s a comedian, a really good one.

This is one of the weirdest dramas I’ve ever seen, and I’m pretty sure it’ll be just the same for you. I really recommend this one!

If you didn’t laugh seeing that clip, I have no idea what makes you laugh. This is just hilarious!
