While I did mention this drama about a year ago, in the Winter 2008 Drama Preview, I didn’t actually watch it until now. And I sincerely regret that, because this drama definitely made it to my top 10 of all time.
Edison no Haha is a drama about a kid named Hanafusa Kento (played by Shimizu Yuya) who together with his mother moves from Akita, where he was treated as a problem child in school. In his new school he is at first welcomed with warm hearts, although that’s about to change as Kento becomes a problem once again. Even though he’s causing a lot of trouble, there are some who believe that Kento is actually a genius. As a matter of fact, Kento is a very curious boy whose dream is to become an inventor, but he’s not fit for the regular Japanese schools as he can’t stay quiet, and just does what he feels like all the time. But to keep him from being expelled is his inexperienced hometeacher Ayukawa Noriko (played by Ito Misaki), and an highly educated man named Miura, who wants Kento to become a true genius (played by Tanihara Shosuke). Together they work as hard as they can to make Kento’s dream come true.

I really enjoyed this drama, Ito Misaki just keeps growing on me and this is definitely my favorite drama with her in it. Tanihara Shosuke who’s actually Ito Misaki’s ex-boyfriend in this drama, is also really great, especially when the two are fighting, he doesn’t really care about what he says, which makes for some very funny moments. 8-year-old Shimizu Yuya is one I’m going to continue to follow as well, I’ve seen two of his three dramas so far, those being this one and Celeb to Binbo Taro.
I really do recommend this drama, if you’re not that much of a fan of Ito Misaki, give this a try and see if it’ll change your mind. Oh and also, the kid in yellow who blew up is from this drama, let’s see if you can find him!
Name: 伊東美咲 (いとう みさき) Name (romaji): Ito Misaki Real name: Anzai Tomoko (安斉智子) Profession: Actress and model Birthdate: 1977-May-26 Birthplace: Iwaki, Fukushima, Japan Height: 171cm Star sign: Gemini Blood type: AB
Where do I know her from?
The first time I saw Ito Misaki was in Densha Otoko. Back then I didn’t really become a fan of her, actually I didn’t become a real fan until I watched her in Suppli.
Why I do/don’t like her
Ito Misaki is a bit older than my average favorite, she’s mature and usually do different roles than my other favorites. Maturity aside, she can be really witty from time to time, see Edison no Haha for example, and I love that about her. I also love her voice a lot, it’s very motherly and has a different cuteness to it. Besides that, she’s very beautiful and she’s tall which makes her stand out from the masses.
Suppli, or サプリ (Sapuri), is a drama about a girl whose name is Minami Fuji, a 28-year-old office worker in an advertising office. Minami is very focused on her work which makes her love life a living hell, kind of. However, one day, she meets with a guy named Ishida Yuya, a part-timer at the office, and her life gets even more messed up, in a funny way (at least for the one who’s watching).
Acting as Minami is the very well known Ito Misaki (from Densha Otoko, Edison no Haha etc.) and Yuya, the part-timer, is played by Kamenashi Kazuya (1 Pound no Fukuin, Nobuta wo Produce etc.). There are lots of familar faces in this drama besides these two, to namedrop some, Eita, Shiraishi Miho, Asami Reina and Ryo. So you probably know at least one of them from before.
I really like this drama, Ito Misaki and Kamenashi Kazuya definitely makes a funny couple. It’s always a pleasure to see Ito Misaki, but what’s really worth to mention is that Kamenashi is wearing turtle earrings! (ftw)
A new year is here and there are many doramas to look forward to. Honey and Clover premiered today, I’m not going to watch it until it’s finished and subbed though. Other doramas I’m looking forward to this year are these:
Binbou Danshi starring Shun Oguri and Yu Yamada.
I’ve only read the short synopsis by Tokyograph but it sounds interesting. I’ve only seen Shun Oguri in Hana Yori Dango as a rich guy, this time he’s poor and takes on other peoples debts.
Mirai Koushi Meguru starring Kyoko Fukada.
This one sounds really interesting! Kyoko Fukada plays the English teacher Meguru Yoshida who discovers a special power which makes her able to see the people around as they look 20 years in the future. Might be really funny!
Cosplay Yurei Guren Onna starring Ai Takabe.
Lots of teachers this year, this time Ai Takabe stars as the high school teacher Fumiyo Nabekura whose lack of friends is the result of a gloomy personality. Trying to find her purpose in life she dresses up at night as a fictional ghost and terrifies other people. Even though Ai Takabe isn’t one of my favorites, she did good in Shimokita Sundays, of course with the help of Aya Ueto. It sounds good and she’ll probably do a good job!
Edison no Haha starring Misaki Ito.
A first-grade teacher discovers that one transfer student, considered to be a problem child, may actually be a prodigy.
I’m not so sure about this one but I like Misaki Ito from Densha Otoko so I have to give it a try, it might be very interesting.
One-Pound Gospel starring Kazuya Kamenashi and Meisa Kuroki.
Kazuya Kamenashi as a boxer, I hope he’s not too serious cause he’s supposed to be the funny guy. It’s a mixture of comedy, sports and romance and reading the rest of the synopsis gives me hope. Kazuya has no control over his appetite and that forces him to fight in a higher weight class which of course leads to a series of losses. Sounds like it could be fun after all!
I might also take a look at Atsuhime just because it stars Horikita Maki and Matsuda Shota.
Other than these new and upcoming doramas I still have many old doramas to watch. I’m currently watching akihabara@DEEP and there’s four doramas in my to watch list (Hana Kimi, Abarenbo Mama, Stand Up!! and Hotelier).
