Very Orange Update

As some of you might know, this blog is running on the Thesis theme. The Thesis theme was recently updated so I was forced (by my own will) to upgrade mine to the latest version. Because I had to mess with my previous customizations a bit I decided to give the site design an upgrade as well.

yonasu.com on Thesis 1.5

yonasu.com on Thesis 1.5

The previous design was nice but there was too much white and lacked a sense of uniqueness. I’m continuing to roll with orange as my main color as you can see, dropped some blue and gray, added some black and lighter shades of orange.

The biggest change is the background color and the shadow on the sides, that makes a huge difference. The header navigation is also new and liked by @Jamaipanese^^ The multimedia box seen at the top of the sidebar has been removed until further notice.

Finally I also removed a couple of images from the header rotation, new ones are on the way.

I hope you’ll be able to enjoy this version of yonasu.com as much as me! Suggestions and requests are very much welcome but if orange isn’t your favorite color I can’t really help you right now^^

Edit: I also added a retweet button in posts on the right side of the post title. (Not visible on the front page)

Edit 2: Changed the font from Lucida to Helvetica.

I like it, now, it’s more cheerful :)

I’m glad you like it! Cheerful is a good way to describe it :)

I like it, a bit of an orange overload at first though ^^
Let me guess, your favourite colour is Orange?

Haha yeah I can see it being a bit of an overload at first, especially if you have a really wide window. And nah, orange isn’t really my favorite color, I do like orange on websites a lot though^^

Jamaipanese November 4, 2009 at 2:33 am

one colour to rule them all!

by the way I also like your dynamic header

I also like my dynamic header, but I need to work on the images, everything doesn’t go well with orange^^

I hope you don’t mind the constructive criticism, but I saw a header with beer. While it was Japanese beer, it sort of felt a little out of place given your usual content. That’s just my two cents though.

Constructive criticism is always welcome. I’ve been thinking about removing that header actually, not because it feels out of place but because it fades to white on the left side. I do want to feature Japanese food and drinks more often but I haven’t been able to publish that kind of content in a while, hopefully those kinds of headers will feel less out of place for you in a while.

I do have my “usual” content but in general I can write about anything Japanese (and sometimes Korean)^^

Looks good to me. Just wanted to note that I never saw the multimedia box on top of the sidebars. I wonder if it was being blocked by my ad-blockers?

Thanks. Yeah it’s possible that your ad blocker hid it which is one of the reasons why I don’t use ad blockers except for the built-in browser pop-up blockers. Like the header, the multimedia box was a rotation of pictures and ads, so it probably blocked the whole element when it saw an ad. Which kind of sucks as that way it also blocks internal campaigns like featured posts. Either way, no need to worry about that now as I don’t have plans on bringing it back anytime soon!

Brad F. November 4, 2009 at 3:14 am

That is a shame. I’d have liked to see some of the campaigns. It makes me wonder what else it’s blocking. I disabled it for your site now but it’s a bit late for that I guess.

yonasu November 4, 2009 at 10:52 am

Yeah, the only thing you’ll see now are the ads I guess. I might bring it back later, I just haven’t decided what to do with it yet.

Thanks? :P

Btw, you should totally add an RSS reader counter below your rss button so we know how close you are to the 100 goal. You’ll find that in the Publicize tab on Feedburner.

Will do^^

I gotta admit, it looks damn gorgeous. That’s it, gorgeous. I would love to see a different font and a little more typographical goodness but I don’t think even gods have enough power to brainwash you from not using Lucida.

Thanks!^^ My favorite font is actually Helvetica, Helvetica Neue to be exact. What font would you use?

Shining Star November 4, 2009 at 12:41 pm

I’d say it’s one step closer to look like dannycho’s site.

yonasu November 4, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Haha are you kidding? This looks nothing like his site O.o

Will November 4, 2009 at 12:59 pm

He’s just talking about how danny’s site is also dominantly orange.

Ragnar November 4, 2009 at 12:59 pm

Danny Choo hasn’t patented orange color, you know.

René November 4, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Ooh, I love it! Love the spacious width. If it’s any comfort, it doesn’t look anything like DC.com. lol

Thanks! It’s a little wide for 1024px users (a small part of the sidebar is hidden for them), but since 75% or more of my readers use a higher resolution it’s better like this. And yeah, it definitely doesn’t look anything like Danny’s site^^

alafista November 5, 2009 at 12:34 pm

Orange is nice and cheerful, but just abit too bright and distracting for my eyes ^^

Will November 5, 2009 at 12:38 pm

maybe he’s trying to distract you from the quality of the posts XD *jokes*

yonasu November 5, 2009 at 12:42 pm

I see!^^ I don’t find this shade of orange too bright but a lot of people set their monitor’s brightness level to ridiculously high levels, I’m sure you’re not one of them but I do know a lot of people who set the brightness to 100%.

I can find colors like this annoying if I’m in a very dark room, but in broad daylight or with lights turned on in the room it’s fine. But pure white is probably even more annoying, sadly I have both xD

Shining Star November 7, 2009 at 10:59 am

Brightness 100% FTW!!! xD I know I do that sometimes.

Haha why do you do that?
